Windows Solution | How to Connect Between Windows XP and Windows 7 Through LAN

You might encounter this problem on how to Share a files between Windows XP and Windows 7 through LAN. Many of us not knows how to do it. Actually this is an easy tutorial you can solve it by changing some value into your Windows settings. By default Windows XP sets the Workgroup as MSHOME. While Windows 7 feature WORKGROUP as the default workgroup, now you can easily get rid of this problem.

To connect Windows XP to Windows 7 you need to change the workgroup name of either one of the OS. I recommend you to changing the workgroup name of Windows XP from MSHOME to WORKGROUP.



Sharing Files between Windows XP and Windows 7:
  1. To change Workgroup in your Windows XP, right click on my computer and click on properties. In Computer Name tab, check the workgroup. By default it is WORKGROUP. In my case I named it QUANTUMBYTE.

  2. To change it, click on Change button. A new window will pop up. There you can define your own workgroup name.

  3. Now you may run Home Network wizard go to Control Panel > Setup Home Network in windows XP. Then there you’ll have easy LAN connection. Make sure that workgroup name during wizard is setup to your own workgroup name not MSHOME. then Restart your Computer to take effect.

  4. Now in windows 7 PC, right click on My Computer and click on properties. On the Right side of your Computer Name click Change Settings. New Window will pop up then click Change button see the picture below, Another Window will pop up, you may now change your workgroup name by your own. this is Important all your OS must be the same workgroup name to share each other.

  5. Now go to control panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center. At the left sidebar, click on Change advanced sharing settings.

  6. In new window, Turn on Network discovery, File and printer sharing and Public folder sharing by clicking on the respective radio button. Under File sharing connections, Click on Files sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption. Because Windows XP may not support 128 bit encryption. And turn off Password protected sharing.

  7. Do the same for "Public(current profile)" and "Home or Network" connection.

  8. Now after changed it, Restart your Computer. Now you can easily access files and folders and even internet and printers from network.You can see the files in network.
